Ed Newton grew up in San Jose, California, where his teen years read like a scene right out of the movie "American Graffiti", back when cruising the boulevards and street racing were popular. After two years at UCLA and two at the Art Center School, he found that his newly formed airbrushed shirt painting business was not only lucrative but great fun. At this point in time, Ed Roth convinced "Newt" that it would be even better if he were to join forces with "Big Daddy" so that they could build some wild show cars together, in addition to creating even more weird and wacky art on shirts and decals. Another perk was the fact that Roth didn’t mind if Newt did free-lance design work on the side for other custom car builders, toy companies, specialty automotive companies or magazine publications. After BDR closed Roth Studios in 1970, Newton moved to Ohio to become Roach Studios Creative Director for the next 15 years. Over the last couple of decades, Ed has done a lot of corporate design work, in addition to offering his own line of Limited Edition Prints. He also licenses his wild car designs and illustration talents to companies like Testors and Revell-Monogram, and his recent Hot Wheels Collectibles "Lowboyz" are still being produced by Mattel, Inc. Most recently, Ed completed a logo design for VH1. He also designed all the transitional art for animating the "hot rod golf cart" for that network’s "Fairway to Heaven" special presentation which aired April 24, 2004. While future focus will no doubt be on Motorburg, his recent work with surreal oil painting on larger canvases should allow for some new and intriguing creative possibilities.
