If you are in the market for a car, don’t forget to consider the secondhand market. There are some real bargains available and the used market offers a huge amount of choice. What are the main advantages of secondhand cars?

Price
The main advantage by far is price. Cars tend to depreciate significantly as soon as they are driven away from the showroom so even extremely low-mileage used cars are much cheaper than brand new examples of the same vehicle. Of course there are some exceptions to this rule, particularly rare or sought-after cars tend to hold their value well, but in general, the rule applies.

A used car is also likely to be significantly cheaper to insure than a brand new one so you can make further savings here.

Depreciation
Used vehicles also depreciate at a much slower rate than new ones which means that if you need to sell your car on at some point, you won’t lose too much of your initial outlay (depending on mileage and condition of course).

Choice
The used car market also massively increases your choice of cars as all makes and models are included rather than just this year’s releases. You may have to really hunt down the car of your dreams but if you look long and hard enough, you will find it in the end.

Warranties
Until recently, a manufacturer’s warranty was only valid for the original buyer of the car and could not be transferred to future owners. Increasingly though, car makers are now providing warranties that can be passed on to the next owner of the car and all owners for the duration of the guarantee. A used car is a much more attractive proposition when it comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. Related to this, warranties are also becoming longer and longer in duration.

Reliability
Similarly, the increased reliability of modern vehicles also makes used cars a better bet than in the past. Simply put, nearly all modern cars develop faults much less frequently than cars built just 10 or 15 years ago. These days, cars with 70,000 miles or more on the clock can drive almost as well as they did when new. When a fault does occur, replacement parts are much less expensive than in years gone by so it shouldn’t break the bank to rectify (although this will vary with make and model).

More reputable dealers
Most used cars in the UK are currently selling very well which is due in no small part to the increasing number of reputable dealerships. The shady secondhand car dealers of legend are fast becoming a thing of the past.

Faults have come to light
The majority of secondhand cars tend to be more than two years old and so there will have been plenty of time for any inherent faults to surface. Half an hour or so spent online researching the car model in question will soon flag up any known faults. For the most common faults with popular cars see this website.
So, as we have seen, secondhand cars have many advantages and should never be ruled out if you are in the market for a bargain new car.
